Bruce Hoy adds: "The empty shell cases were on the right wing.  These may have been pulled out, perhaps the earlier visit from the RAAF.  I would be extremely doubtful if the locals would have bothered pulling out all those shell cases.  These were lying on the same wing when I first got to the aircraft"
